First Trimester Out-of-Class Writing Assignments
2001-2002

Assignment 1:  “The Vice Story”

“The Story of the Captain’s Wife, and an Aged Woman” begins by declaring that there is no vice to which human nature is more prone than criticizing others for the fault(s) which we have ourselves.  Write a short story or personal narrative in which you (as the author of the story does) portray this theme.  Maximum 3 double-spaced, typed pages.  Please type and use MLA style (see your Little Brown Handbook if you are not familiar with this style).

Assignment 2:   “Ben Franklin’s Almanack”

Ben Franklin in “Poor Richard’s Almanack” gives many pieces of “homely wisdom.”  Rank and discuss the current efficacy of each piece of advice, starting with the most relevant and ending with the least relevant to modern society. Maximum 3 double-spaced, typed pages.  Please type and use MLA style (see your Little Brown Handbook if you are not familiar with this style).

Assignment 3:  The Definition of Prejudice

Keeping in mind the (indirect) explanation Lee gives of prejudice in Chapter 23 of To Kill A Mockingbird, and also the narratives by Equino, Douglass, Jacobs, Crevecoeur, and Jefferson;  write your own definition paper on prejudice.  Look up the word in the Oxford English Dictionary to find all of its historical meanings, then use examples of the various types and causes of prejudice in our world, both past and present.  Cite at least three of the above sources to support your definition.  Maximum 3 double-spaced, typed pages.  Please type and use MLA style (see your Little Brown Handbook if you are not familiar with this style).
